Submission to Husbands

3Wives, likewise, be (A)submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, (B)they, without a word, may (C)be won by the conduct of their wives, 2(D)when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. 3(E)Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— 4rather let it be (F)the hidden person of the heart, with the [a]incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 5For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, 6as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.

A Word to Husbands

7(H)Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, (I)as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, (J)that your prayers may not be hindered.

Called to Blessing

8Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be [b]courteous; 9(K)not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary (L)blessing, knowing that you were called to this, (M)that you may inherit a blessing. 10For

(N)“He who would love life
And see good days,
(O)Let him [c]refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
11Let him (P)turn away from evil and do good;
(Q)Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
(R)And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Suffering for Right and Wrong

13(S)And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14(T)But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. (U)“And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” 15But [d]sanctify [e]the Lord God in your hearts, and always (V)be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the (W)hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16(X)having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

Christ’s Suffering and Ours

18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring [f]us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,

FAQs

What does 1peter 3:19 mean? ›

This suggests that Jesus, in spiritual form, was alive and proclaiming to the "spirits in prison" before returning to physical life. This may mean anything from those who died before Christ's ministry, to fallen angels, and a host of other options.

What is 1 Peter 3 talking about? ›

In this chapter, he extends that idea of submission to Christian wives. Peter commands them to be subject to their own husbands—even unbelieving husbands. Why? For one thing, their Christ-changed lifestyle of "respectful and pure conduct" may be enough to win their husbands to Christ without having to use words.

Which one was Peter 3? ›

Peter III (1728 – 1762) was emperor of Russia for six months in 1762, chosen by his unmarried, childless aunt, Empress Elizabeth, as her successor. Young Peter of Holstein-Gottorp lost his mother, Elizabeth's sister Anna, at three months old and his father at the age of 11.

What does 1 peter 3 3 4 mean? ›

Peter is saying that if we do not have a gentle and loving spirit, no amount of jewelry, cosmetics, or gorgeous clothing will help in fostering the kind of love that will keep a man and woman together, or win an unbelieving spouse to Christ.

Would Adam and Eve go to heaven? ›

In the question of seeing Adam and Eve in heaven, there is no direct Scripture that says we will or won't. Because of this, we must put on our legal hats and consider all the circ*mstantial evidence, which I believe leads us to answer that question with a yes.

What does God mean by being sober minded? ›

Sober-mindedness, according to Peter, means living with a single-minded focus. What is that focus? “Being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” It means this; sober-mindedness is living with eternity in view.

What is the sermon on 1 Peter 3 1? ›

Here he tells Christian wives to be subject to their husbands, even unbelieving husbands. Why? In part, husbands may be won to Christ by the example of their Christ-changed wives. Christian husbands are also commanded to honor their wives or risk having their prayers hindered.

How to be a 1 Peter 3 wife? ›

1 Peter 3:1 says, “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word.” The gospel is not an invitation to receive. It is a command to obey. To disobey the word is to be an unbeliever. These were not men who never heard the gospel.

Who is Peter writing to in 1 Peter 3? ›

He wrote this letter to a group of Christians scattered throughout the northern areas of Asia Minor, where he may have previously preached the gospel. Peter wrote to a group of people that probably included both Jews and Gentiles.

Who did Jesus preach to in 1 Peter 3? ›

For here it is explicitly said that the gospel was preached to 'dead ones'. Some expositors feel that this means that the gospel was preached in Noah's day to people who were then alive, but of course are now dead, and that Peter has telescoped his remarks by saying the gospel was preached to 'dead ones'.

How old was Peter III when he married Catherine? ›

Answer and Explanation: Peter III was only 17 when he married Catherine II of Russia. Not only was Catherine his wife, but she was also his second cousin. They were married until his death in 1762, which remains a mystery to this day although an autopsy says a stroke.

What did Jesus say 3 times to Peter? ›

There we read the story of the Risen Lord's appearance to the disciples in Galilee. As the apostles are fishing, Jesus appears on the shore. Once they arrive on the land, Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?” He repeats the question three times. It is often pointed out that the word for “love” changes the third time.

What is the lesson of 1 Peter 3? ›

This verse makes it clear that wives are to be subject to their own husbands. This is important because some men want all women to submit to them, but this unbiblical. As a woman, you are not required to submit to all men. If you are married you are required to submit to your own husband.

What does 1 Peter 3 1 5 mean? ›

1 Peter 3:1-5 Meaning and Commentary

And next the apostle directs husbands how to conduct towards their wives, to dwell with them, and honour them, because vessels, and weaker vessels, and also heirs of the same grace of life; and besides, to use them ill would be an hinderance of their praying together, 1Pe 3:7.

What is the lesson of 1 Peter 3 1 7? ›

Peter is encouraging wives to dress up their internal person as well as their external. The inner, spiritual adornment is in the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

What does it mean that we are saved by grace and not by living a good life? ›

God's Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own efforts or works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace Alone. Faith Alone. Grace alone means that God loves, forgives, and saves us not because of who we are or what we do, but because of the work of Christ.

What does it mean that he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire verse? ›

John promises in today's passage that the Messiah will baptize not just with water but with the Spirit and fire (v. 11), an image with double meaning. The long awaited flame of the Holy Spirit will purify the soul and eventually remove all corruption from those who submit to the Son of David (Isa.

Is purgatory found in the Bible? ›

The answer is that you won't find the specific word “purgatory” in the Bible. But the concept is surely there — the notion of a period of purification after death before one is worthy to enter heaven.

23). To say that we must worship God “in spirit” means, among other things, that it must originate from within, from the heart; it must be sincere, motivated by our love for God and gratitude for all he is and has done. Worship cannot be mechanical or formalistic.
